Guided Tour of the splendid frescoes of the Brancacci Chapel, an absolute masterpiece of Masaccio and Masolino The fire that in 1771 destroyed most of the basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine fortunately spared the splendid frescoes of the Brancacci Chapel. Among the few surviving parts of the church there are the ancient sacristy and the transept, where the Corsini Chapel and the Brancacci Chapel are located. The former is a rare example of Baroque architecture, decorated with frescoes by Luca Giordano and sculptural reliefs by Giovan Battista Foggini. The latter, decorated by an important pictorial cycle, is now part of the Florentine Civic Museums and is accessible from the cloister adjacent to the basilica. Visiting the famous cycle of frescoes we will admire one of the highest masterpieces of the Florentine Renaissance. Giorgio Vasari defined the frescoes as the "school of the world" and in fact they were a source of inspiration for generations of artists who visited the Brancacci Chapel to study its precious pictorial decoration. The three walls of the Brancacci Chapel were first frescoed by Masaccio and Masolino between 1424 and 1428 with a cycle on the Stories of St. Peter. Left unfinished for many decades, the decoration of the chapel was completed after about fifty years by Filippino Lippi, a pupil of Sandro Botticelli. The visit of the chapel will allow you to admire one of the most representative pictorial cycles of the early Renaissance!
